respected fire department situated in the heart of the Town of Huntington.
Our goal is to continue Huntington Manor's heritage of excellence by recruiting applicants that reflect the diversity of our community. We appreciate your interest in becoming a member of our fine department. Below you will find information which will guide you through the application procedure to becoming a member of our elite fire fighting team. |
The following are the prerequisites for becoming a member of the Huntington Manor Volunteer Fire Department:
You must be between 19 and 45 years of age
You must be a resident of the Huntington Manor Fire District for at least 1 year prior to submitting your application.
You must be in good general health in order to perform rigorous firematic duties.
You must be able to speak, read and write English.
New York state law prohibits discrimination because of race, creed, color, sex or national origin.
If you meet this criteria, then you can fill out a membership application. Here is what's involved:
The application consists of 3 pages and an authorization form releasing any police records to us. The application must be filled out completely. Any questions left blank may cause the application to be rejected. The completed application must be signed and notarized by a public notary in order to be accepted by this organization.
A $5.00 application fee must be submitted with your application. A personal check or money order is acceptable. Checks will be made out to the Huntington Manor Fire Department. This fee must be received in order for us to process your application.
On the application you will be asked to supply us with 3 personal references. These references along with your employer will be contacted by our investigation committee.
A physical examination is required or every applicant. This examination will be done by a fire district physician and will be of no cost to you. You will be notified by our investigation committee as to the time and place of this exam.
After the application is returned and processed, you will be contacted for a personal interview with our investigation committee. It will be explained to you exactly what is expected of members of the Huntington Manor Fire Department. You will be encouraged to ask and answer many questions. This give you the opportunity to gain a better understanding of what it is like to be a volunteer firefighter.
Any misrepresentations or fraudulent information given to us during your investigations, either written or verbal, will result in the immediate rejection of your application.
Here's a little bit on the application process:
The list of applications will be maintained by the Huntington Manor Department's Corresponding Secretary.
Any new application will be read before the department members and added to the existing list. It will be placed at the bottom of the list in order according to the date that the completed application was received by the Corresponding Secretary. The application will move up the list until it reaches the top.
Once a company (Hook & Ladder Company or Hose Company) has an opening, the company Captain will request from the Corresponding Secretary, the application of the next applicant on the list.
The next applicant will be contacted to inquire if he or she is interested in applying for membership in the company that has an opening. If so, the application is forwarded to that company for review and investigation. The applicant will be told that they will be contacted by someone from that company's investigation committee.
If the applicant is not interested in membership at that particular time, he or she has has a few options. 1.) If the applicant is not interested in the company that has an opening, their application will stay at the same position on the list until the next available opening. 2.) If the applicant is not ready to become a member of the department they can keep their name frozen at the top of the list. However, the applicant must notify the Corresponding Secretary in writing when they would like their application reactivated. An application may stay frozen on the list for a maximum of 4 years. At which time it will be removed if there has been no contact from the applicant. 3.) If the applicant is no longer interested in joining they can have their application removed from the list.
The Corresponding Secretary will forward the application of an interested applicant to the requesting company. The company will then follow their usual procedure for new applicants.
After the applicant is interviewed by the company's investigation committee, it is voted on by the members of that company using written ballots. If the vote is favorable, the applicant is required to have a physical exam by the District Physician at no cost to the applicant. Upon clearance by the Physician, the applicant is sworn in as a probationary member.
Here's some information about being a probationary member of our department:
The Huntington Manor Fire Department consists of two 65 member companies, The Hose Company #1 and The Hook and Ladder Company.
In this organization we follow a chain of command. It starts with the Chief, followed by three assistant chiefs. The company is commanded by a Captain and two Lieutenants.
A one year probationary period is required by all new members. An additional twelve month period may be required in the event that our minimum requirements have not been met.
A probationary firefighter is expected to respond to a minimum of 35% of all calls. Once the probationary period is completed, a member must respond to a minimum of 25% of all calls.
A new member will be issued a full set of fire gear and a pager. All fire calls are announced via the pager. Members are on call 365 days a year, 24 hours a day.
Training takes a very high priority in our department. We invest numerous hours of time and lots of money in training our new members. A new member is expected to make a total committment. Trainings are held on various Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings. Special training is held regularly at the Suffolk County Fire Academy in Yaphank. Additionally, a new member must attend and successfully complete the Suffolk County Basic Firefighting school which consists of 26 training sessions. All training sessions are mandatory while on probation.
New members are expected to attend all company and department meetings. There are two meetings every month. One for your respective company and one for the department. Meetings usually are in the evening at 8pm
